Looking back at 2012 and forward to 2013

For the last couple of days I have not been able to get this line from a Christmas song out of my head "Another year over and a new one just begun". So true, 2013 has just begun. The first week of January has ended, it's the perfect time of the year to reflect on 2012 and look forward to 2013.

Big Island Lava
Lava Walking on the Big Island Hawaii

2012 was a good year for me, I travelled a lot and visited some awesome places. I got the chance to visit Hawaii and I absolutely loved it. I always thought Hawaii was mainly about beach- and surfing holidays but I could never have imagined how beautiful and diverse Hawaii is and how many other things you can do there. So what did I do?  I hiked the Na Pali Coast on Kauai, I biked down the Haleakala Volcano in Maui and I went lava walking on the Big Island. Hawaii is definitely on my list of best travels ever.

Mountain Hiking
on a hiking trip

What else did I do? I went hiking in Austria, my favourite destination for a summer mountain hiking holiday. I went a couple of times already but I never get tired of it, it's an incredible beautiful country. I also went to Lisbon and the Algarve, had a relaxing SPA holiday in the Black Forrest and did city trips to London, Milan, Bruges, Brussels and even my home town Antwerp :-)

So 2012 was a really good year of travel for me taking into account that I only travel during my holidays and go on a city trip during weekends, which works perfect for me.

What's to come in 2013? My holiday plans for 2013 are not fully finalised yet but what's to come for sure is that I will combine my number 1 and 2 on my bucket list being Peru including the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu and the Galapagos Islands. I already planned and scheduled the whole trip and I'm so excited about it, I cannot wait to go!

I will also do some city trips again, for sure Paris and Rome are on the list this year. I would also love to make it to Jordan. Other than that, we will see what 2013 brings :-)

I'm very happy about the progress of my travel blog, which I started in September 2012. End 2012, I already had lots of followers on social networks and a reasonable amount of unique visitors each month on my blog. Thank you all very much for following !

I'm also really excited that some travel blogs start mentioning my blog in their posts, J from Travel on Inspiration wrote a review of my blog and Charu from Butterfly Diary mentioned me in a post on bucket list travel destinations 2013 Brandy from It's One World Travel in her Best Travel Tips post, Jeremy from Budget Travel Adventures in his Best travel moments of 2012 from around the world post, ...

So what will 2013 bring for my blog? I will use 2013 to continue building my travel blog and I will think a bit more about my writing style. I'm not sure yet whether I want to go for a more personal or neutral travel blogging style. Let's see in 2014, how it turned out :-)

What are your plans for 2013, any trips planned already?
Let me know in the comments here below.
Wishing you all a very happy 2013!

  1. It's so good to hear that you're planning a trip to Machu Picchu, one of those places definitely on my own list. I'm so looking forward to seeing you photos from there. My wife and I may be going to Scotland/Ireland next summer if we can work out the details. I'll let you know!

  2. What a great 2012 you had! I too love Hawaii, although I have only been to Oahu it is a beautiful place for a Canadian to hide from the winter! I hope to go again in 2013.
My big trip though is to France (fingers crossed). I actually just launched a campaign called #WTFrance2013. I would really appreciate any advice you have since you've been to Paris before - you could win a guest blog post on my website!

I have been blogging since March 2011 and still feel like a newbie trying to get my blog to represent the truest form of myself. I tinker with writing all the time and my photography has been progressing for the better - I've went from a novice to now having people want to purchase prints!
But blogs constantly change as you'll find. Keep pushing yourself and writing!
Congrats to another year of blogging for both of us!

    1. Hi Murissa, thanks for stopping by. I did not make it to Oahu and only went to Kauai, Maui and the Big Island but maybe next time there will be a chance to visit Oahu as well. Your Paris campaign looks great and I left you a comment there with some tips.
Congrats to another year blogging for you as well !

    1. Hi Ayelet, thanks for stopping by :-) Yes I'm definitely looking forward to this year. I already got a bonus to start with (I'm in Singapore right now) but I'm most looking forward to the Inca Trail and the Galapagos in May. I hope I will make it to Jordan later in the year and will definitely let you know in case I have the chance to cross over.

  11. Wow! Sounds like 2012 was quite a year! But Machu Pichu and the Galapagos? 2013 will be even better for you! I look forward to reading all about it! :o)

I don't have any major travel plans for 2013 yet, other than a weekend in Santander (northern Spain) for a wedding. My group of friends will be coming together from several different countries so will be crazy fun! And I will definitely try and explore Santander a bit. ;o)
But I'm pretty sure more trips will crop up somewhere during the year... I can't keep still for long! :p

    Happy New Year!

    2. I'm not sure if the city itself has a lot to offer (particularly at that time of the year), but getting together with my group of crazy friends from when I used to live in Liège will definitely be fantastic! ;o)

  12. My big plan is a move to England in September. So, I'm doing some travel locally in the states before I go. I am going to Memphis, Tennessee for a long awaited trip on my birthday (May). I'm also going to Grenada to visit a friend going to Vet School. And then, I hope to hike Yosemite with another friend, but she has torn her ACL. We are waiting to see the results of our trip.

    1. WoW that is really exciting. England will be quite a chance but will give you to opportunity to travel around Europe quite easily. Looks like you have some great travel plans before that. Yosemite is awesome, have fun.
